There are various scientific studies that have investigated the connection between body tension, grounding and health. In particular, the effect of grounding on inflammation regulation and regeneration has been examined in numerous pilot studies and clinical analyses.

Sleeping with an earthing mat

This study tested the effect of grounded sleep (with a conductive bed surface) on healthy subjects after intensive eccentric exercise (downhill running) compared to a control group. Earthed sleep phase led to lower performance degradation (e.g. CMJ & drop jump) and lower inflammatory markers (e.g. IP-10, MIP-1α, sP-Selectin). These are indications of improved regeneration thanks to grounding fixed linens.

In this pilot study, 12 people with sleep, pain or stress problems were grounded at night for eight weeks using a grounding mat on the mattress. Salivary cortisol levels (in a 4-hour rhythm over 24 hours) were measured before and after the intervention. The scientists also recorded subjective data on sleep quality, pain and stress. The results showed that night-time cortisol levels fell and the 24-hour profile approached a normal rhythm. Sleep problems, pain or stress decreased in almost all participants.

Eight healthy volunteers underwent an eccentric load (gastrocnemius muscles). Four of them were earthed (via conductive contacts) and four were not. Blood and saliva values (enzymes, cortisol) as well as pain and pressure measurements were recorded over 72 hours. Grounded persons showed more favourable values: lower CK values, less pain. This indicates accelerated regeneration.
